Bryson has also written many nonfiction books on a range of topics, including science and language. Consequently, in the memoir, Bryson often compares his experiences in Europe with those in Appalachia. A Walk in the Woods documents Bryson’s attempt to get reacquainted with his native land after spending many years abroad. Bryson subsequently wrote several travel memoirs based on his experiences traveling in Europe, notably Notes from a Small Island (set in the United Kingdom), before returning to the United States. His first travel memoir, The Lost Continent: Travels in Small Town America documented his experiences exploring the United States in the 1980s. Bryson also began writing memoirs centered on travel. During that time, Bryson worked as a journalist, ending up as high-ranking writer for The Times and editor for The Independent. As a young adult, Bryson dropped out of college to travel in Europe and ended up settling in the United Kingdom. Here, he met his friend Matt Angerer, who features under the pseudonym Stephen Katz as Bryson’s travel companion in A Walk in the Woods.

And of course, I have to talk about how Coniam cites his sources with a detailed bibliography and thorough chapters/appendix notes as well as provides captions with the photographs used. This allows him to be objective about his subject at much as possible. Like other fans, he too is baffled by why Groucho participated in Skidoo. For example, while he likes his solo film Double Dynamite, he is more mixed on the movie A Girl in Every Port. Coniam clearly admires Groucho for his wit and swagger, but he can also be critical about his work at times. In great detail, the book dives into Groucho’s solo career from being the first brother to be in Vaudeville in the 1900s to the 1976 reissuing of his book Beds the year before he passed away. It’s a great for any Marx Brothers aficionado, and I really mean any Marx Brothers aficionado. Luckily, lifelong Marx Brothers fan, co-host of the Marx Brothers Council Podcast, and author of The Annotated Marx Brothers: A Filmgoer’s Guide to In-Jokes, Obscure References and Sly Details Matthew Coniam has filled this gap with his 2016 book That’s Me, Groucho!: The Solo Career of Groucho Marx. When these books get around to talking about Groucho’s solo career, which entailed stage, radio, movies, and television, they do this in about a chapter or less (with the exception of You Bet Your Life). Usually, they tend to focus on their movies and their personal lives. I’m a huge Marx Brothers fan I have read a ton of books about the legendary comedy team. But Sydney is a crusading journalist at heart, and less an engraver than a man of justice – thus Agatha takes on an apprentice, Eliza, whom Agatha secretly hopes will make a match for Sydney. Sydney, her rabble-rousing nineteen-year-old son, is her eyes and ears on the streets of London, and the boy will someday take over the business, though she fears he will get himself in so much trouble agitating for the common people that he’ll be in jail before that happens. It’s a business she inherited from her husband, Thomas, whom she still misses. London-based Agatha Griffin is an engraver and printer whose business is her life and whose public depends on her for accurate representations of current events. First used as a military fort, then occupied by worshippers of Vaermina, both times it has fallen into disrepair and disuse. Erandur refers to the temple as a ruin within a ruin. Now I don’t this to come off as diminishing Debra Hill’s SIGNIFICANT contributions to the franchise (not to mention Jamie Lee Curtis as well as Danielle Harris who played Jamie Lloyd) but the director’s chair as well as writing duties outside of the first two films have ALL been held by men, so it feels at least SOMEWHAT significant that between 19 Kelly O’Rourke was tapped to write The Scream Factory, The Old Myers Place, and The Mad House all three starring the one and only original slasher villain and all three are EXTREMELY hard to find! No seriously, if you want to read these you’re gonna have to drop some serious cash as listings go in the hundreds and none of them are available in any digital format. With the release of a new Halloween movie that’s getting everyone reinvested in the franchise, it seems like the right time for me to really dive into something I’ve always been curious about but never found much information on namely the Halloween Novels! Yes, there were three books written about Michael Meyers that weren’t adaptations of the movies, and what’s probably the most interesting thing about them is that, outside of co-creator Debra Hill, they are the only official Halloween media I can find that was created by a woman. |
